Land care under high fire pressure
The South Coast carries some of California's most serious fire history. The Tea Fire, the Jesusita Fire, the Thomas Fire, the Cave Fire. The frontcountry above town has burned repeatedly, and homes built into the chaparral and oak woodland live with constant exposure. Vegetation management here isn't optional, and it isn't theoretical.
We work properties from the foothills above the Riviera through Hope Ranch, Montecito, and out to the surrounding ranch country. Each site gets a walk-through with a trained arborist who understands the local fuel behavior.
Why this region demands serious work
Sundowner winds, the dry north-flowing winds that pour down from the Santa Ynez Mountains, are a defining feature here. They've driven the most consequential fires in regional history. Combined with mature chaparral, eucalyptus stands, and homes that grew up into the wildland, the result is one of the most studied fire environments in the state.
The City of Santa Barbara and county fire authorities run rigorous defensible space programs, and insurance carriers have non-renewed broadly across the South Coast. Properties without documented vegetation management face renewal challenges that are now routine across the market.

Hillside considerations
Most South Coast residential work involves slope. Steep, decomposed-granite soils, narrow access roads, and properties that step up the foothills create real logistical challenges. Equipment scaling matters here, and we bring tracked and compact tools that can reach areas wheeled equipment cannot. Hand crews handle ember zones and sensitive areas around mature oaks and structures.
Slope also affects fire behavior, and our zone work reflects that. Upslope vegetation requires more aggressive spacing than the same plants on flat ground would, and we plan accordingly.
Eucalyptus and pine considerations
Eucalyptus stands are characteristic of the South Coast and represent one of the more challenging fuel types to manage. The combination of stringy bark, accumulated leaf litter, and high oil content makes them serious ember sources. Pine groves carry similar issues. We don't recommend wholesale removal in most cases, but we do prioritize selective thinning, deep cleanup beneath canopy, and removal of dead and downed wood.
Seasonal timing on the South Coast
December through March is the productive window here. The ground holds moisture, vegetation is identifiable, and we work well ahead of when restrictions begin tightening. By April we shift to fire-priority work, and summer is reserved for emergencies and maintenance visits. The Santa Barbara Chamber of Commerce publishes regional advisories, and the civic history of the region illustrates how the wildland-urban edge has shifted over recent decades.
Pricing in the area
South Coast vegetation work runs higher than valley work because of slope, access, and the fuel loads typical of mature chaparral and oak. Residential defensible space packages typically run $2,000 to $9,000. Estate properties and multi-parcel projects are quoted individually. We provide written estimates with itemized scopes after on-site walks.
Why local owners choose Coyote Brush
Trained arborists, equipment scaled to the property, and documentation built for inspections and underwriting. We treat each site as the long-term asset it is, not as a one-time job. Whether you're protecting a long-held family home or a recent purchase, we approach the work the way you would if you had the time and training to do it yourself.
